May you never tire of reading about crows, for I fear I will never tire of writing about them.

They’re gaining on us fast, you see. First they starred in Hollywood’s 1993 supergoth action flick, THE CROW. Then, back in real life, the hilariously named Dr. Bird revealed the cleverness of the common crow years later in a series of experiments reported here. Then we witnessed them figuring out how to use fishing hooks to catch their dinner.

What will they think of next? Well, think Shaun White meets Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS.

Think . . . CROWBOARDING! Watch below.

In Arkansas, 4000 beautiful red-winged blackbirds began dying on January 1.

No people were injured as motionless bird bodies plummeted to cold suburban lawns for reasons unknown.

The news is dreary without a doubt, but slightly less so if you imagine the birds are far away now, their tiny souls soaring to new and stranger heights, their every wing flapping furiously against the face of God.

Just to spite the Grim Reaper in 2011: Let’s live like we mean it. The angels have all the wings they need.

Happy New Year.
