A short while ago, I was snacking on a bowl of farm-fresh cherries when I happened upon an off-putting specimen. It was two cherries seemingly bound into one. Basically, a Siamese cherry!

Such mutations are not common, but they’re perfectly natural. (It’s certainly more natural than anything contained in, say, a Cherry Pop Tart or Cherry Kool-Aid.) In fact, a British farmer once discovered a one-in-a-million red-and-green apple hybrid in his orchard, according to a BBC report in 2009.

Yet I couldn’t stomach my mutant cherry. I threw it out, but not without photographing it first, of course.

Looking at that photo now — presented here for your scientific scrutiny — I question my course of action. The fruit wasn’t damaged. It was simply different. Yet I deemed it too scary to eat.

What are your thoughts?

Growing up watching FINDING NEMO and THE LITTLE MERMAID, many a child fantasizes about that magical moment when a cuddly undersea critter will finally saunter out of the sea and into a warm, dry place called the human heart.

Who knows? Perhaps sea creatures dream of that moment, too. Consider the jumbo squid: He’s been invading California for years now.

Also consider the specimen featured below. The octopus featured here was definitely seeking something new when it crawled up onto the shores of Moss Beach, California, but what, exactly? A new habitat? A moment in the spotlight? Your delicious human flesh?

Somehow, it doesn’t quite feel like a Walt Disney moment.
