Jason Voorhees in FRIDAY THE 13TH. Darth Vader in STAR WARS. Hannibal Lecter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. What do all of these classic Hollywood villains have in common? They all wore creepy masks, and in part, that’s what makes them scary.
Sometimes what scares us the most is not an unhinged thrill-killer at the end of his rope (perhaps because we all feel like going postal once in a while). Quicker to infiltrate our nightmares are the cold and stoic ones.
How can anybody take a human life without betraying the slightest hint of teary-eyed remorse, or, at the other end of the psychiatric spectrum, a perverse exuberance? Only Jason, Darth, and Dr. Lecter know for sure. Murder is just a means to an end for these stone-faced killers.
Perhaps we will add Batman’s newest nemesis, Bane, to our Horrific Hall of Fame come July. What do you think? Is he scary?
